Alexa is, as you may know, a tool popularly used by webmasters to measure internet traffic. However, it's not entirely accurate as it is based solely on the users who install the Alexa toolbar in their browsers. Basing this information simply on the usage of the toolbar could skew the rankings simply because the type of person who would install the toolbar might visit a different selection of websites. This dependency on toolbar data also means that toolbar users can intentionally manipulate the data and skew the results to make certain sites rank lower than others (with Alexa, lower is better).
it gives your audience some idea of how popular your site really is. I can tell you that I get over 80,000 visitors every month, but when a third party like Alexa can estimate my popularity through its sampling technique, it can go a long way to enhance my credibility. How does Alexa determine ranking? Alexa isn't entirely accurate, because it relies on statistical sampling that isn't random. Alexa achieves its ranking system by counting how many pages were visited by people who have downloaded their toolbar. And that group of people is anything but random: they tend to be webmasters, internet marketers, and other market-minded people. And technical people tend to completely turn up their noses at Alexa rankings, because installing a toolbar that "spies" on their surfing habits makes them upset, even though Alexa only collects aggregate information
The "Alexa Ranking" is only really useful to compare websites to others, and even then the rankings are only useful when the rankings are lower (lower numerically, representing a higher number of visitors). Usually, a ranking of #100,000 or lower is considered accurate.
