Link Exchange:

The process of getting quality Web sites to link to your Web site, in order to improve search engine rankings.

One-way Link building:

The process of getting a link from a site without linking back to that same website.

Two-way (or) Reciprocal Link Exchange:

The process of getting a link from a site by providing a link back to that same website.

Triangular Link Building:

The process of getting a link from one website and in return provides a Back link from one of our other website.

If you are new, don't ever rely first on those link exchange software. On Google's guideline, link building should be natural, well-moderated and relevant enough to your site to become effective while those LE software, you can't control the quality of links.

You must first done with the basic task of SEO. Especially in social bookmarking and directory submission. this job will help you to gain at least 20% back links.

If you wanna do link exchange, make sure you do it with relevant sites that have good PR and reputation.

I would advise double checking if you are doing an exchange and make sure that the pagerank of the other site is at least as high as your site preferably higher to get the most benefit. One-way links will always be the gold though.

I'm also new in SEO. But I'm doing link building by submitting my link to social bookmarking sites,
I also do directory submission and I created accounts in various social networking sites like twitter,
facebook and tumblr to promote my site. And I update them regularly. I suggest you do this method.
It works but it takes time to earn high ranking and a good traffic. Hope that I gave you some help there and

You have to create articles and submit it to article directories. you can also look for sites that have similar theme with yours and asked them if you can post content to their site with a link back to your site and vice versa. Posting to blog sites with similar theme with yours can also be used in posting contents, again you have to ask them to do link exchange.
