In my opinion,Social media optimization is a form of off-site promotion, just like link building. A quality link doesn't only come from any site, but one that is relevant and has visibility to engines and users, as should a social media effort. As with a SEO campaign, a social media effort should not be considered a project, rather a process that is continual. It can be one of the most effective means to entice users to speak and share online what you offer along with what is great and not so great about you.

These social media sites can get you a lot of worthless traffic. If you are trying to sell something off your site, you need to focus on the traffic that generates sales, not just traffic. Social media networks can get you a lot of traffic, but if this doesn't generate sales, it is worthless.

When people use social media sites, their intention is not to buy anything, but to hang out and make friends. So, they are not the right crowd the go after for marketing.

SMO can boost your traffic. It's specifically good in marketing. I've been doing tons of SMO tactics for quite some time now, such as RSS submission, blogging, etc, and the results have been amazing.

I agreed with the point made by you.Although SMO is a strong technique for SEO but there is also a dark side for SMO.
One thing to be aware of is you can very often get a double listing to appear. If you’re not careful or have done some advanced planning it’s pretty easy for a competitor to do some virtual drafting and appear directly behind or underneath you.
Another point to notice it takes a lot more work for you to get that first listing than it does for the second guy to grab onto your coat tails.

Social media optimization is very good for SEO, but you must be very careful with it.

social media also known as web 2.0 marketing is one of the most effective ways to drive traffic to our site and this are used and embraced by a lot of people, this cost lesser than other advertising methods for all you need to do is gain a lot of cyber friends..

This is the trend of social media especcially, Twitter the most powerful internet marketing tool in my mind (But not the best if your purpose is SEO).

I'm not sure about this. I tend to think it's a bit overrated and overhyped.
