I agree, webmasters aren't really that interested in the methods, until payday at least.

Optimizing your website without doing keyword research is like trying to pick apples from a tree without first checking to see if there are any apples on it or if the apples are within your reach. You could end up putting in a lot of effort but going home with little fruit from your labor. So it’s a key component of search engine optimization.

yes i also believe keyword research is the most important part of seo because if you'll go for wrong keywords thn no matter how good you rank you'll not get quality visitors.

I use a software tool called market samurai and I look for keywords that get searched 500 or more times a day and that have 150,000 or less competing websites. At this point I start to analyze the top ten in Google's results for those keywords only if they passed the first test. If one of these sites has less then 50 backlinks and 2 or more sites have a PR3 or lower I come to a conclusion I have a shot into breaking into the top ten.

At this point I will start with a link building plan of 2 to 4 links a day until i get into the top ten of Google.

I end up changing my mind as to which keywords to use. Keyword research is definately the hardest part - whether you use tools to help you do it or not!
