Is there a difference on folders to put sitemaps in?

Postby tdkerner » Sat Aug 19, 2006 4:54 am

Does anyone know? I want a strong sitemap when Google searches my website. The website http://xml-sitemaps.com creates sitemaps for free, and it is easy to use. It is my understanding they suggest to place the sitemap into a "public_html/" folder on a site.

I currently have my sitemap in a "sitemap.html" folder. Does anyone know, will Google search this "sitemap.html" folder as thoroughly and use this folder the same as a "public_html/" folder? Or should I add a "public_html/" folder? If so, should I remove the "sitemap.html" folder?

I heard that the best way to get listed on a search engine searched with Google is using this sitemap and to post your website's URL on a forum like this. I created a sitemap for http://www.vintagejewelrybyteresa.com/ and would like to know more about which folder to place the sitemap in.

Thank you for the helpful information. I have the sitemap in the root directory domain.com/sitemap.html folder and domain.com/sitemap.xml folder. If this is adequate, then I am on the right track.
