Beware of instant approval directories, google classifies them as spam. Even though you may some short term improvements (I doubt though that there'll be any improvements) you will surely lose out in the long term. Stay away from such sites

I agree. Backlinks can still help promote your site. Just choose directories with high PR and that they allow a "do follow" link. And avoid link farms.
