DMOZ (from directory.mozilla.org, a prior space name) is a multilingual open-content catalog of World Wide Web joins. The site and group who keep up it are otherwise called the Open Directory Project (ODP). It is claimed by AOL yet built and kept up by a group of volunteer editors

I agree. Backlinks can still help promote your site. Just choose directories with high PR and that they allow a "do follow" link. And avoid link farms.
