Theres nothing wrong with that just chose a related one and also much better if the directory is free and one way.

Google and other engines will not penalize your website for having a link directory. Am I understanding your question? Search will not penalize your site for anything that is not within your control. However, you have to watch who you're linking to. Don't link to FFA farms and similar places. Anyone can go and post your site in a FFA farm. As long as you don't link out to one, you'll be fine.

Getting links from directoriesis not a bad idea. search engine counts it in backlinks.

Links from web directories will be counted as one-way links.

I've heard that you should limit the total number of links on each page to under 100... perhaps even less, like say 30 on each page

so if you had a directory of 120 links in one catagory, you should split them into 4 pages of 30 links each
