I have heard that there's not much benefit anymore to .gov sites or .edu sites, but I don't really know.

I have heard that they are great links as long as you don't have to recripricate the link.

I would reciprocate a link if I could get a government link. Even if not for the search engine aspect, it seems it would be neat to say that such and such gov page believes your site content is noteworthy.

.edu and gov domain name is said to be a trusted link. But if you want to sell or buy domain name your site must be related to your site because it is the friendly way of finding your website in the search engine.

Your site will need to have some really great, relevant content to get a government site to link to your site. Very few of us have such high-quality content. You're probably just wasting your time if you're trying to reach out to .gov sites to get them to link to your site.
