Free backlinks?

Hi All,
Here is the million dollar question: How can I get free backlinks to my site? I know Google is penalizing for links that you paid for (there are a ton of sites that have pay-for-link programs). Further, I don't want to do a million reciprocal links (as Google penalizes for too many links). What to do? Any suggestions?
Regards,
Rob

writing interesting and related topics to your site can be a factor on getting links.. for example,, your visitor satisfied and get the info they needed,, there is a chance that they'll share it to their friends and probably will also visit your site...

Thanks.
I notice a lot of free directories want you to post a reciprocal link.
As we know...the problem is over doing reciprocal links (Google is frowning on that, per Mat).

then don't submit your site if its required to have a reciprocal links.. there are so many directories that didn't require reciprocal links...

Don't submit to directories with recip. If i were you, don't just focus on submitting on directories.. I'll suggest you to do forums posting with your anchor text signature..

I'd try to get links naturally. Do some link baiting. The rest of the methods to get links are good for traffic but not too effective from SEO point of view. Normally, if you want to get good quality + relevant links, whether you pay for them or you build something useful to get some natural links

Writing one good article and submitting to as many free article directories as possible has really helped me in the past. They usually have good page rank, don't require reciprocal links, and there is a chance that hundreds of people might repost your article with your link back to your website.
