Google penalizing directory submissions?

I have read a few articles lately from self proclaimed seo experts saying that you should not submit your link to directories as Google (and others) now frown upon their use, because people have abused them (spam I guess).
What is the real deal? Should we use Directory services, or run away from them?

If you submit your website to unrelated directories, there is a possibility that Google might penalized you. But we really don't know whether submitting our website to different directories might penalized our website.

Just be careful on choosing which directory is reliable.. there are still directories which are not spammed yet. Just look for them and everything will be ok...

I think not on the directory but on the categories,..try to choose you category properly.

Submitting your site to article directories is still helpful to get one-way links. Just make sure that it's relevant to your niche.

If you submit your link to lots of directories at one time, then there will chance to catch by google. Instead of doing this crap you can make many set of directories and start submitting in them periodically.
It will grab a continous flow to your website and also consistant traffic....

IMO, Google themselves have their own directory. Why should they penalize us for submitting to other directories?

I don't think that google penalises directory submission; still there are some good directories which give quality backlinks to your site and just submit in relevant category, that will work.

G might have punished the websites which had recieved too many backlinks in short interval of time. Submitting links to directories is a proven and recommended way to get backlinks.
