Well for the fact that you're allowing co-members to let them view your site by means of placing a widget, then it is likely a good source of traffic.

I've tried widgets, but never really had any success with them. I have heard of folks having good success, I just can't figure out how to duplicate it.

Widgets are used when visitors of your site want to plug your link or stories to these famous social bookmarking sites. So my answer is YES. It is helpful.

Yes, widgets are effective tools to boost site traffic. My blog has several widgets where my readers can use and participate in.
