I have a question-Why does everyone have a directory these days? So many of them are poorly thought-out and barely legible, is anyone actually profiting from this?

From an SEO perspective, there are probably less than 2 dozen general directories that will provide a backlink for either Yahoo or Google. There are also plenty of niche directories that may relevant to your business. A few directories drive traffic, but usually its pretty minimal.

Most of these directories are created by webmasters/seo specialists themselves, in hope of building backlinks for their own sites. That's the reason why there are thousands of web directories out there.

I think directories are helpful for link popularity because when search engine's spider crawls those directories & find our links over there then it proves good and helps to get a higher position in search engines

Do you know the competition these days? There are many who are still looking for building up a directory and they earn either by selling the data. Or may be through adsense.

You can gain profit from it through adsense. Or by simply Featuring a site on top of your directory list but it comes with price.

In addition, these directories help you learn more about other relevant sites where you can exchange links or possibly work through partnerships in the future.

Simply because there is a mad rush for getting link backs from even poorly managed directories and this is the best of getting inbound links and getting regular traffic.
