A site-wide link is when one website links to another website from every single page, they used to be really good for SEO purposes but now Google devalues them so they are not as good as they used to be!

Google is slowly catching on to finding any and all ways to detect an unnatural link, or a paid link. Footer site wides and IMO sidebar links have become devalued a great deal of the past year or so.

The potential sitewide links penalty is part of Google's crackdown on text link buying. Most people that buy links purchase them on a sitewide basis. As such, Google seems to equate site wide linking with purchased links so you can potentially get penalized. Sometimes it even happens inadvertently. A friend of mine runs a nice sports blog that consists of several thousand pages. As a favor to me (and without my knowledge), he placed a link to one of my one sports related sites in the blog footer. Seven days later, my site was completely deindexed. Although it sounds great, I'd stay away from sitewide linking.
