Hi I'm hoping someone can share some information about the following:

What is pinging and how does it work?

Is it relevant for all web sites?

What is the best way to go about it and are there any automatic software solutions?

There are two kinds of ping. But, their tasks are almost the same. The first ping is a basic internet program allows you to verify a particular Internet address exists and can accept requests. The second kind of ping is using for blogs. I think your question is about this one. Some services normally looking for blog updates and postings. So, once you update your blog you send a ping to those services. The blog ping normally use xml format and the servers which are accepting that ping have special software to do the task.
