As far as SEO is concerned, every one is ultimately looking for links to increase the traffic and PR of his/her site. It is obvious that in link popularity forum, u will be looking for better options to increase your link building power. Let me clear you the important types of link building;
1- One way link
2- Two way link
3- Three way link
In one way link, you just acquire link from other site regardless of any means. While in Two way links, you have to exchange link with other one in order to mark it. Link exchanging is its best example. On the other hand, in three way link, you get link from other site of link provider against your link to another site of link provider and by linking 2nd and 3rd link. This is another way in which you can link exchange with another industry. which is not possible if you are looking in same industry.
