I find it easier to get backlinks from comment sections in blogs, on shorter keywords. Often there are limits on the number of words you can have as your name. Some sites allow you to use keywords as your name especially if your business name contains the keywords. In regards to how many keywords you could use I wouldn't know. I imagine it would be site specific.
Getting long tail keyword backlinks through articles and forums are just as easy as short tail.

Yes optimizing your site for long tail keywords is suggested because initially since the site lacks a good authority and back link profile it is very much advised to target the low competition keywords. Also it is not sufficient to think of long tail itself...one has to make sure the keyword converts well too.

The whole point of long tail keywords is they are very targeted to convert and also are usually lower competition to rank for. The more long tails the better!

Long tail keywords are easy to target in comparison of short keywords because they are less competitive.

Targeting log tail keywords always help in achieving traffic from local areas but if you want to achieve traffic from wide range then must target the global keywords which are of course short tail I think.
