Forum signatures can be very important in SEO. Let's say for instance you post on a forum about how to increase you rankings in google and that page eventually gets a high page rank because of ppl viewing it in the organic search results. That page becomes a high quality backlink for your website because your signature is on it. That's my understanding of it anyways.

Yes, you said right, the link from the relevant forum helps SEO but so many links from the Forum considered spammy and looks un-natural that may harm the website rank as well. But if anyone does the Forum Posting just for getting the backlinks then he/she on the wrong track.
