The quick and dirty answer: The best social media network for your business is the one where your audience is engaging. But there’s more to it than that.

We recommend a 4-step process for picking which social networks are worth your time:

1. Identify Your Limitations

You need to determine how much time you can realistically spend on social media. You also have to consider your budget — It’s free to create profiles and share organic updates, but you’ll need tools to schedule, monitor, and measure your efforts. Costs for those can increase the more social media profiles you have. Plus, social media marketing works best when you use a combination of both organic and paid promotion, so you should budget some advertising spend into the equation.

2. Identify Your Audience

If you haven’t created buyer personas, do that first, outlining your ideal customer’s demographics, goals, and challenges related to your product or service, interests/hobbies, etc. It should also include a section on which social networks they actively use.

3. Determine Where Your Audience Hangs Out

You may have a gut feeling about where your audience is active, but don’t rely on instinct. Confirm it using these techniques:

Facebook - Upload your email list and/or install Facebook’s tracking pixel on your website and look for matches to Facebook users. You need to wait a week or two with the pixel to give it a chance to collect enough information. Look for a match rate of at least 15-20% to consider using Facebook.

LinkedIn -If you use Gmail, Rapportive is a great tool for matching email addresses to LinkedIn user accounts. It can be time-consuming, though, so take a random sample of contacts from your database, copy their email addresses, and place them in a new email in Gmail. You can also search LinkedIn by job title, company, and location.

Twitter - Like Facebook, you can upload email addresses and install a pixel to check if your audience is using the network. Most likely match rates will be lower r than Facebook, but if it’s less than 5%, it’s time to move on.

Pinterest - Look at your competitors’ followers, or find bloggers in your industry that are active on Pinterest and see if their followers are your ideal customers. Above all, if possible, ask your customers if they use Pinterest.

Instagram - Look at competitors’ and bloggers’ followers to see if they include your target audience, and ask your customers if they use Instagram. Also, use hashtag research tools to see if people are using hashtags that use your brand name, product/service names, etc.

Other Social Networks -Pew Internet Research is a great resource for social network usage and demographic data though they tend to focus on the big five. You can also try Googling “[insert social network name] demographics” to help you decided if it’s even a network to consider.

4. Decide where to start

If you find your customers are active on five networks, it doesn’t mean your business needs to be active on five networks. Your different ideal customers may not be using the same networks, but look for overlaps. Maybe most of them are using Facebook, but a few are using Instagram. Start with Facebook. Build your presence and engagement with your audience and then consider adding a second network once you have the first one mastered.
