There is no basic difference between travel and general search engines but travel search engine gives more priority on travel sites.

I'm not so knowledgeable on how a meta search engine works. All I know is that it passes queries on to many other SEs and then summarize all the results in one.

Meta search engines use the database of other search engines to give results simultaneously with these for a search term. Travel meta search engine puts travel related sites on priority while giving search results.
