Alexa Ranking Question

Post by paulpsd »

We've got a site that gets about 700,000 pages views each month. Our Alexa ranking is about 50,000. Over the past year, we've been watching both our page views and ranking go up.

However, in the past couple months, our pages views have continued to go up, but our Alexa ranking has gone down. (We used to be closer to 35,000.) If Alexa ranking is a function of page views, how can this happen?

Any ideas?

There is a formula that is determined by statistics that come from alexa toolbar:

Unique users (with alexa toolbar) per day
Pageviews for each user (alexa toolbar) per day

Those two are used to calculate your alexa pagerank, giving unique users a higher importance.

Thanks for the info. So basically, it sounds like our site has hit a plateau in drawing unique visitors, and that most of the extra pageviews we've been getting have been from returning visitors.

No, the alexa rank is only from people that have the toolbar installed. If not all your visitors have the toolbar installed, which a lot of people dont, then you wont see your alexa ranking go up! And dont worry, alexa rank has nothing to do with anything and is probably the most useless one of them all!

Should this Alexa ranking be monitored? I just heard about this ranking, and I'm afraid its going to be another thing to focus on in addition to the already complicated general SEO. What is a good Alexa ranking? It doesnt affect rankings in search engines does it?

SEO is like a whole new subject for me...

Alexa ranking is about as worthy as any e-penis.

This ranking really doesnt reflect much, but none the less could be used just to say youre a high traffic site (with little basis)

Is there anything out there that gives more accurate information about website stats?
