Meta Tags Are Still Alive
Meta tags still have a place although the value has been diminished. Use of a robots.txt file is our preferred manner of addressing this type of "content". Either way we not noticed any substantial difference in SEO.
There's no penalty for using meta tags so, within reason, why not use them? But, whatever you do please don't use the worthless "revisit after" tag.

Meta tags ARE important in both the head and body of your page. The content of the page is important. The inbound links are important. Original, fresh and consistently updated content is important.
I think this question is one that comes about all the time in various formats...when people are looking for a way to fast track their way on top of serps. There is NO such thing as a sure-fire, fast and reliable way to get on the 1st page. It takes a very long time and a lot of hard work to get there.
Anyone who tells you otherwise is probably trying to sell you something.
You need to learn, understand and implement all aspects of seo into you website.

Most search engine do not look at them. However, we still recommend to include Meta Tags. In a few search engines, it might help you move up a few positions. There are other criteria such as link popularity that have a greater effect than meta tags.

It's been a long time that search engines are not using meta tags as basis to rank the site.

Well, I agree. Meta tags means nothing today. It can't help your ranking at all. At some point, you can add meta tags to your site but don't spend much attention and effort to do so.

Re: Meta tags obsolete?
Meta descriptions and titles are still a great way to help encourage people to click on your page within the listings. However Google is now adding their own tags based on where the user search query appears on your page so this means you need to ensure keywords are included in the core text and not just added randomly.
