SEO or PageRank which is the more important?

I know this is an old thread, but hopefully I can add some relevant content.

Page Rank of your own site is not that critical if your objective is to earn money online. There are many practitioners who make decent money with a PR of 0 or 1.

What matters in making money online is SERPS, or how highly you rank in the search pages for your keywords. The main way of achieving a high SERPS is through backlinks. But not all backlinks are the same. A backlink from a high PR page, or from within a high PR site has greater impact on your own sites SERPS than a lower one.

So the key is not to worry too much about your own PR, that will look after itself if you can get enough higher PR sites to link back to your own. And at the same time you will get pushed up the search engine rankings nicely.
