How did you become an SEO, what attracted you to the industry?

Many SEO's have sprung up in the past few years and a lot have different reasons for wanting to be or choosing to jump into the industry.

*example: I originally started doing Web design and development, but with the birth of search engines and the need for web sites to be positioned for certain keywords I decided to offer inhouse SEO. The learning process went quickly for me, but what really attracted me to search engine optimization was the challenge it presented and the income potential for being good at it.

You can be as detailed as you like, but make sure to include the specific reasons SEO attracted you or maybe you simply HAD to learn it to promote your own sites. I am planning on doing a write-up later using the results from multiple forums and the best answers will receive a direct link from the write-up, a basic link and a featured link in my SEO directory. In addition if it's popular enough I may distribute the article, so it is possible there will be links on other sites as well.

Once I publish the main article, I will include what attracted me to SEO and site promotion and the whole industry surrounding.

Mine is even better....

Several years ago, I wanted to make a website for the non-signed musician. Thus, I picked up a 'HTML For Dummies' and leaned how to make sites using notepad. (Text editors all the way!)

But that fell through, and life went on....

A few years passed by, and just a couple of months ago, I got notified that the factory I was doing accounting for, was shutting down. Yeah....300 people out of work, all at once, really sucks.

So I made a resume, and shotgun it out to all the industries in town. Later, I got a call from the plant manager at a small firm on the ass end of town. He says, "I think we could use someone like you, why don't you come down for a visit?"

"Sure, I'm really not choosey at this point" ;)

I get there, start talking, and he tells me he needs someone to get their webpage listed. It's been on for quite some time, but they've had absolutely no luck getting it to place... for the past 5 years.

Now, mind you.... there's nothing on my resume' that says "web site developer" or "system administrator".... just a bunch of accounting/computer stuff.

He say's "Can you get us to the top?"

Really needing a job, I say... "Well, i've never really tried it before, and I know just a little bit of HTML. But I think I can at least figure it out, and get you close."

"Good... you start in two weeks!"

If you look at the current trend; most of the good writers eventually are turning out to be good SEO's as they get an excellent exposure to the online marketing field.
