Backlinks and search engines - confused!!
I am confused by something. I've used a number of the different link checker tools online. They all tell me that I have 100+ backlinks with Yahoo, Alltheweb, Altavista -- and exactly 0 with Google. Why is this? Why the big disparity? Why would I have zero links according to Google and so many with the others? Can anyone shed some light on this?

Confused with Google? That's nornal. Lots of webmasters would like Google to be less picky. But Google is #1 search engine with its own rules and restrictions. It displays as many backlinks as it consider to be right to display. It doesn't mean it shows all of you backlinks. So, don't warry, keep building your backlinks as many as possible, and try to follow Google's rules. Links from the relevant sites are preferrable, try to avoid bad neighborehood sites, etc. I'm sure in a little while Google will show some of your backlinks, it takes a time.

My opinion is that Google wants relevant links :
1. the site linking to you it's best to have the same theme (web directories, the so called "link farms" are not accepted)
2. the text that contains the link has to be relevant to the page content it links to and to the page where it sits; more, the anchor where the link lands has to have around it words related to the words of the link.
I have the same problem : 178 links with Yahoo and 4 with Google.

Thanks for the responses. A good number of my links are definitely relevant (they aren't affiliate sites or anything), so maybe you're right, it just takes time. I will be more patient. I was afraid I had accidentally done something to anger the Google gods or something!

It's a common misconception of all webmasters. Google don't give 100% results, I've learned all of it because of my work. Google give 25% result and crawling relevant topics. Just go on what you are doing and Google give much credit to your site by page rankings.
