While doing SEO first step is, submit your site in different directories.
Because of directory submission search engines automatically find you & list you.
Also get quality backlinks & update content regularly.
Keyword are also important, use proper keywords.

For anyone first getting into SEO doing research and spending time understanding the processes is key. You have to read a lot and ask questions before or while you are testing different strategies for different sites.
A good way to gain more knowledge in a short time is to read forums or blogs relating to SEO or Online marketing/promotion. We are lucky to have so many great resources of information and people willing to share their experiences so that we can all learn from eachother.

I'm new to this forum. Further to the previous question, is getting your URL listed in Bloggs and disscussion groups essential? I assume that submitting a site address to Google/Yahoo via their sit submission pages is a waste of time?

The main steps involve in SEO is:
1.Study your site.
2.Research keywords and make list of keywords releted to your site or product.
3.Write a good discription about your product and services.
4.Use your most important keyword in title tag.
5.Optimize meta tag.
6.Search engine submission.

First choose keywords that you want to target than start doing link building with article submissions, directory submissions, web2.0 and all other services like that.
