What is Indexing?

Indexing is the process of creating index for all the fetched web pages and keeping them into a giant database from where it can later be retrieved. Basically, the process of indexing is identifying the words and expressions that best describe the page and assigning the page to particular keywords.

Indexing is the process of creating indexes for record collections. Having indexes allows researchers to more quickly find records for specific individuals; without them, researchers might have to look through hundreds or thousands of records to locate an individual record.

Actually indexing is the process that search engine's carry out to firstly find your site, then secondly "digest" the content of your site. This is the way that search engines gather information about your site in order to "score" each page using their ranking algorithm.
