That is not exactly true. You can rank with out back links but it would have to be for something very specific. an example would be for something I rank for being I first busted this scam. Scam alert fake darwins data survey. I have no links going to this page at all but its one of my most viewed.
Now thats out of the way here is how back links work. there are 2 types of links you can leave on blogs forums and other sites that allow it. And they are both considered backlinks. dofollow and nofollow, dofollow links will help you get page rank if the link comes from a reputable site and shares key words that help link them together.
Now direct linking has an effect but its not as strong as many people claim. in order to get a top spot for page rank you need to use combined effects with your back links. look into something called a linkwheel. The more advanced that you make the linkwheel the more juice will be trickled to your page. Next your site needs to make use of theme silos. Theme silos will give you more chances to rank for a specific key word or set of key words.
Building back links is about building relevancy/ authority for your webpages (not necessarily site) So when you build back links use deeplinking (a link to a specific page/article in your site) and make that deeplink relevant to the topic where you left the link. If you have anymore questions please pm me or even check out my site and leave me a message there.
