Yes you're right. They are very important when it comes to SEO.

In a simple explanation, ON-PAGE Optimization is the process of optimizing your website/blog through its codes, tags, keywords and many more. I think it is called "ON-PAGE" because the process rotates INSIDEyour site/blog. Some of the techniques that involves in

While on the other hand, OFF-PAGE Optimization is the process of optimizing your website/blog OUTSIDE.
OFF-PAGE optimization are as follow:

1. Site/Blog Directory Submission
2. Social Bookmarking
3. Article Submission
4. Press Release Submission
5. Forum Posting
6. Participating in Community Sites like Yahoo Answers!

and a lot more...

IMO:

ON-PAGE Optimization = to properly optimize all your website component/codes
OFF-PAGE Optimization = to get more links

Hi,

I agree with all of the above! Just wanted to offer you a resource from my site...there are some free quick guide pdf's you can download that cover these topics, if you are new to seo and building web pages it's sometimes useful to have the basics on a piece of paper in front of you...even I use it still as it's easy to forget something simple like changing your title or making a header an H1/2 tag etc.

It's a basic checklist that should hopefully keep you from future frustrations.

Hope it helps!

off-site optimization is going to other sites so that many people will know about your site and visit your site. examples are social bookmarking sites and directories and forums. . .

On-Page factors are related directly to the content and structure of the website. On page optimization techniques include writing SEO friendly web page titles and meta contents, Setting heading tags, alt tags, internal linking, content formatting etc.

Off page techniques are link building techniques which will build more back links to your site and thus increase link popularity.
