Do you think that web design has an effect in SEO and building traffic? Can I have a very basic design and still have good traffic? Or do I really need to study web design?

A very basic design is okay. But nowadays, visitors or people likes to see beautiful designs or something eye-catching.. Specially with colors, graphics and let's say art.

Design plays a good role on optimization. Specially with the website usability. A good navigation will be a lot better than just a plain basic.

There are many factors that affect website success and web design is one of them. The reason I say website success instead of SEO is that many times people get caught up in SEO as the end-all goal of their website - it isn't! Conversions are the goal and many factors affect it.

Here is a list of the main factors that affect conversions, and details behind the list can be found at our web development blog on our site by clicking my sig below then the Blog link at left:
· highly aesthetic design
· fast load times
· persuasive, benefit-oriented content
· error free web (W3C) standards compliant code
· Search Engine Optimized (SEO) content
· Undergo Competitive Analysis
· high degree of usability
· Accessibility Standards Compliant
· continually tested and updated
· promoted in appropriate top website properties
· Incorporate analytics
· Use a Content Management System (CMS)

You can have millions of people going to your site every day from SEO but if the design stinks and people leave as soon as they get there then it's not worth it.

Design really matters in optimizing a site (ex. the format (is it dynamic or static?, images (jpg or animated?), etc.). But it's particularly for the benefit of your visitors. It should be user-friendly an easy to navigate.

Design is very important and plays a big factor when it comes to customer appeals. Not only with user but also with the spiders. Spiders like to crawl sites specially if your site has the right website structures.
