The most effective way is by putting anchor text in your inbound links. This can be done by using your keyword as your name in relevant blogs to your niche. Make sure not to spam, however, because they will eventually remove the link. Provide value to their post and it will be a great link to your site.
another way to leave anchor text is to look for comment luv blogs, these allow you to put your anchor text as your name, (I find it much better, if I leave anchor text in name box, then put my full name at the bottom of the post, I find I get 9 out of 10 comments approved this way.
Just search Google for "commentluv blogs" - it works.

all tips was useful, but try creating a lens on squidoo, it's one of my favorite method in gaining backlinks and traffic as it can increase the visibility of my site to other web owners..
If you want to rank using competitive keywords, you need to dedicate a lot of time in your linkbuilding activities. Patience is very important in offpage optimization. Implement "only" white hat strategies such article submission, forum posting, etc.
If I were you, the first thing I would do is evaluate the level of competition of the keyword or phrases that you are targeting. In some cases, it makes more sense to go after 3 lesser traffic but less competitive keywords instead of a single highly competitive keyword.
I evaluate keywords by looking at the number of searches in the Google Adwords tool (google it for a link). Then I look at the total number of pages that Google shows for the phrase (the lower the better). Then I take a look at the top 5 listings for a keyword in Google. Record the pagerank and number of backlinks for each page that was ranked in the top 5.
I put all that data in a spreadsheet and review it. I'm looking at the top 5 results to see how much work and backlinks am I going to need to knock one of the top 5 out and replace it with my site or page. Note that not all backlinks are equal so a site that shows 3 backlinks in Google may not be able to be beaten with 4 backlinks. Use the backlink count as a rough estimate of the competition.
