What is the best way to bring traffic to a website appart from SEO?
I have a website that is only very small ( 4 pages ) and there isn't that much text on each page so I suppose SEO wouldn't be very effective with this website.
What other alternatives do I have? What is the most effective thing you have ever done to your website?

Participate in social networking sites such as Myspace, Facebook, Twitter. That'll boost your traffic. Also try Yahoo Answers.

not really!some are internet marketing not for SEO purpose.

If you want free traffic then start SEO with competitive keywords and get ranking soon. Do invest good time in social bookmarking.
If you want to invest money then Google Adwords and Yahoo Search Marketing are better option.

yeah I agree to all above post..participating on social networking sites can generate instant traffic to your site...also try to do some SEO work on your site to make it easier to find by SE and users..

blog posting or directory submition to make your site go to top.

I know you were looking for alternatives, but I recommend writing some content for your page (if you can do so). I have a preschool themed website that I hardly give any attention to. I must do more marketing, but virtually all of my traffic comes from the search engines (since I haven’t taken the time to do much else yet). Since I have never manually submitted to them, they must like the keywords used in my articles.
I also recommend making use of forum signatures. When I participate in forums like these, I like clicking on other member’s signatures to view their websites or blogs. Most I click because I like the tagline and others I just click out of curiosity.

Everytime I stubmbleupon one of my blog posts I seem to get about 100 visits right away in the next hour or two. Give that a try!

The best way I have found apart from SEO are paid options like adwords or yahoo publishers.
This may not be feasible if you are working on a low budget
