I have a new e-commerce site and I do not know if all the search engines have indexed the site yet. The site has been live for three weeks and I have joined many free directories and have also paid to join some of the better rated ones.( yes this one) My question is how do I know which keywords are working. When I plug in the keywords that are on my meta tag and discription I get no results from google, dogpile or bing yet, though I am getting as high as page two and three from yahoo on many of my keywords. Would someone with more knowledge than I explain what is going on where am I at on the search engine indexing cycle and why am I showing up on Yahoo but not Google.

You said your site has been up for three weeks. I think you should wait for another more weeks. Or review your set of keywords and filter it which one you need to prioritize.

Are your target keywords competitive? Your site is NEW, so it would take time before it appears high in SERP. You need to build quality links for months.

Keep on promoting your site and keep on doing link buildings so that your site can earn traffics and move to top ranks.

Have you submitted your URL to Google, Yahoo!, and Bing?
Have you submitted a sitemap.xml file to Google WebMaster and Bing WebMaster?
Do you have a Facebook page and Twitter account for your e-commerce site? And do you actively use it market your site?
Does your robots.txt file point to your sitemap.xml file?
If your answers are no then you have more work to do to get listed on Google, Yahoo! and Bing.

Your site is just starting. Like what they are suggesting you, submit your sitemap to search engines. And just keep on doing your link building. Google loves unique and fresh content, so I suggest you to make some updates to your site content and submit and post it to high PR sites like directory sites, social bookmarking, etc.

Well, Google is the best search engines you can use for your site. It really takes time to get high ranking in search engined so be patient waiting for it. Aside form that, to achieve rankings faster, exert more effort in optimizing your site.

As per my opinion firstly you need to check your website's content. Than use Google keyword tool to find-out relevant keywords for your website. Than come for on-page and off-page Search Engine Optimization to rank higher or to be visible in search engines. Only paid submission is not enough for visibility in search engines. Always be relevant in your seo work.
This tip will definitely helps you.

We can't really conclude anything but surely Yahoo loves your site naturally.

Metatags will DO NOTHING to help you rank on any search engine. Do not waste your time with them. I never use metatags and I have first page rankings for a 19 million search result keyword.
You can see if your website is indexed on google or not by using the "site:" command. Just type "site:
www.yourwebsitehere.com" on google, and if you get a result, you are indexed.
