can someone explain what an article submission is for me?

When you write something informative & which is written for sharing your knowledge then it is called as article. When you submit those articles, it is known as article submission. Article submission helps in getting more backlinks.

Just wondering. Are there any parameters on what constitutes an article? Would a couple of informational paragraphs relating to my site do or do I need to write a thesis?

I got my answer by reading many of the articles in the links provided...which is what I should have done before asking the question. Sorry.
Now can someone answer this for me. If I write an article how many of those sites should I submit it to? Would it be considered spamming if I submit it to too many sites?

IMO I think article submission is not that effective for link building and even traffic.

Don't forget to put a link to your site when you submit an article to article directory. This is the key how your site get a backlink.

Article submission is used to get links so dont forget to put byline along with article when you submit article to article directories.
