How to get back links

Hello everyone. I built a website and thought the world would beat a door to my site. Yea not happening at all! LOL I have been going on Udemy to learn how to get back links to my site. However the instructors send me to websites that they claim have dofollow back links, but none of them do. I'm getting more and more frustrated with listening to these courses and trying to understand how to do SEO from a guy with a really thick middle eastern accent that I can't frigging understand. Or he forgot the password to his own log in??? Anyhow I would greatly appriciate any help you all would be able to offer me. Thanks Nick
