As far as I know google just hides it to avoid spam from SEO experts. That why some page rank checker tools still active
PageRank is a very flexible algorithm that models an aspect of reality. I don't think Google would want to lose track of reality, even not a little bit.
So even if there are viable replacements, there would be no need to "kill" PageRank computation at Google unless the amount of computational power saved outweighs the degradation of overall ranking quality.
