In the Internet Marketing model, SEM will have the task of attracting customers directly. You can imagine SEM including SEO and PPC.
SEO is a site optimized for ranking in Google's Top Resulting (# 1 results page), conversion rates will be high even though businesses do not pay a premium. Users tend to click on regular results, not ads (PPC). Website appears on the top, ie optimizing SEO, will have relatively good content, apply SEO techniques well.

The difference between SEO and SEM is very important to distinguish in my eyes. Search Engine Optimization which is optimizing URLs to rank for certain keywords on search engines. Search Engine Marketing includes SEO but it also entails PPC, and any advertisement on a search engine for certain keywords. Hope that helps guys! Let me know your feedback/opinion.

if you need sales or leads you should start with SEM and If you need better results and rankings you should start SEO.

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is a process to improve the visibility of your website by using the organic (free or natural) search results.
Search Engine Marketing (SEM) is a marketing process to improve the visibility of your website and get more traffic by using paid search advertising. E.g. PPC (Pay-Per-Click) ads.

Both SEO and SEM are the processes to promote the services or products online through the Internet on the Web but the only difference in both the term is SEO brings the Organic Traffic that is long Term and SEM bring the Paid Traffic.

Oh, I think SEM includes SEO.
