in simple words, the sitemap is a list of URL and pages with a link if you create a sitemap so the search engine spider can navigate your site easily.
there are two types of sitemap:
(!) HTML sitemap: User friendly.
(!!)XML sitemap: search engine friendly.
XML sitemap displays the inner framework and organisation of website’s content to search engine, whereas the HTML sitemap will reflect the way that visitors intuitively work through a site making them a great extension to any site. when search engine crawler visits your site it can find easily through the sitemap, it shows a location of your site in the search engine server and provides instructions to a crawler.

A sitemap is a file where you provide information about the pages, videos, and other files on your site, and the relationships between them. Search engines like Google read this file to more intelligently crawl your site. A sitemap tells the crawler which files you think are important in your site, and also provides valuable information about these files: for example, for pages, when the page was last updated, how often the page is changed, and any alternate language versions of a page.

A Sitemap is an XML file that lists the URLs for a site. It allows webmasters to include additional information about each URL: when it was last updated, how often it changes, and how important it is in relation to other URLs in the site. This allows search engines to crawl the site more efficiently and to find URLs that may be isolated from rest of the site's content.
