I prefer to use the text links rather using images as your links because text links will help your serp rankings..

Both are links but text link are much used today because it is search engine friendly.. If you are using images as links, you need to put alt tags that describes what the image is so spiders will be able to detect it.

link is an anchor text that represents an html tag <a href> and title just like this <a href="http:/www.google.com">google</a>. Yes images can count as link and link connected to html tag also such as <a href="http:/www.google.com"><img src="img.jpg"></a>. hope it will help.
seeinstars89 wrote:What exactly is a link that search engines register as a good "link"? For example is it just text that has a <a href with it? Or do images that have a link connected count also? And does it matter what the name of the image is? I am relatively new with this so any help would be good...
