Meta Robots tag is important?

Hi,
I can see nowadays many webmasters are using the Meta Robots tag for doing SEO on the websites.
But I also heard from some people that it was not really important to use it.
Can you tell me if it is necessary or not?

Robots Meta tag is important, because it gives instruction to the search engine spiders that visit the site, either allowing or forbidding them to cache the information on the page

robot meta tags are used to give permission to search engines ....... whether you wants your page or text to be crawled or not..
you can use robot meta tag as
<META NAME="ROBOTS" CONTENT="NOINDEX, FOLLOW">
<META NAME="ROBOTS" CONTENT="INDEX, NOFOLLOW">
<META NAME="ROBOTS" CONTENT="NOINDEX, NOFOLLOW">

For me, it's better to use the same directives for all robots. While it's possible to include several lines with several robot crawler...

Meta robots tags are good for only one page. However, if your site have a lot of pages, it is quite difficult to manage each meta robots tags. The best alternative for this tag is through the use of the robots.txt file in the root directory.

Meta Robot Tag is Really Important Tag. With Use of Meta Robot Tag you can Instruct the search engine.

There are some pages in our site that you don't want to be indexed or crawled...i that case robot.txt is handy. Using it, you can prevent the crawler to visit those pages..
