Directory Submissions

Hello there,
Why is it believed that all the directory submissions should be done manually? There are so many auto-submission programs around - and manual submission will take a lot of time, won't it?

It is true, auto submissions can be bad, they also do not get you into the right categories most of the time. I have come across some semi auto submission software that will just fill in your title, description, and email and you have to do the rest, like your name and category. This is better than auto but manual is still better!

I agree that using auto submission software -- more often than not, can get you in a great deal of SEO "trouble". The best semi-auto search engine submitter ( and SEO software) IMHO is
Arelis's IBP. IBP 9 was released in June 2006. IBP and ARELIS have been integrated into one user interface so your linking campaign can be run from the same program. It allows you to choose how your site is submitted offering hand submission, semi-automatic submissions and auto submits (which I never ever use).
The new version offers many more features than the previous version and I believe that it is the best SEO tool available to date. For example, the new IBP version now analyzes Google PageRank, Alexa TrafficRank, inbound links, inbound link texts, IP addresses and much more. If you haven't done it yet, you should
take a look at IBP 9 now. You can download it for free, so you really have nothing to lose by checking it out.
To Your Success!

I have IBP and it works pretty well. I have used it a few times to submit to directories because of the semi auto, which just fills in some parts of the form and you have to fill in the rest. It cuts your time, but not by that much. It also has pretty good analyzing tools!

A few reasons to do it manually.
1 - You want to make sure to change up your link text.
2 - You should change up your description.
3 - With many you can change this information later, so setting up user names and passwords where you can login to your account is helpful.
4 - The automated ones basically just hit on all the crappy directories anyway.
5 - Several of the mid-level "free" directories have paid options (often pretty cheap) where you can get your listing more quickly. This allows you to decide on a case by case basis which ones to pay for, and which ones to wait out for the free listing.
6 - To help manage this process, just make a weekly goal. Pick one morning a week, and do 10 new directories each week. This spreads out your time, and spreads out the "new" inbound links.

Manual submission is better because you can monitor the quality of sites where you link your site. Automated tools are used for link spamming which can hurt your ranking.
