<script>
document.write('<a href="http://www.mysite.com">MyKeywords</a>');
</script>

Would it be beneficial for me (seo-wise) to put the above code on several external websites? Or are javascript links just crap?

Javascript links cannot be read by search engines so they are pretty much useless if you are trying to have the links point to your site. They will do you no good. Keep it html code if you want the links to be picked up!
