There are many ways to go about this, including forum posting and blog commenting. Just be sure that the sites you are posting on is relevant to your line of business/ website. Hope this helps.

There are so many techniques already discussed above. But if you are looking for some early results then buy some links. But just don't over do it. Take it as one of the techniques of your link building strategy. Just buy few links and see the results. If it comes favorable then do other techniques also like submissions which will create a balance in your over all approach. Search Engine won't hate it.

What are backlinks? Backlinks are incoming links to a website or web page. Backlinks enable you to keep track of other pages on the web that link to your posts. The number of backlinks is an indication of the popularity or importance of that website or page. Luckily, increasing backlinks to your site is very easy, but something that typically is totally overlooked. So many bloggers worry about why their posts/articles don’t receive any comments… where in reality you should be only worried about commenting on other blog sites. I agree with redcube. to increase you backlinks promote our site many social bookmarking sites, directory submissions etc. I'm new in SEO, but I have read that social networking also build your backlinks. Just update your accounts regularly and make a quality and interesting content for your site and to the social network that you have.

well...to increase backlinks and promotion of site are different things. If you want to create Backlink then join High Pr forums and Blogs. It is really beneficial if you contributing.

There are the different ways for collecting backlinks but If you want to increase your backlinks from Google than you need to concentrate in quality. If you don't know about quality than read SEO blogs OR Google blogs.
