Yes, Google Adwords is very effective in researching your keywords.

Keyword tools are good but the majority work well only on English. For example I'm from Romania and whatever tool I tried it didn't work : except for Google sandbox and traffic analyze. I have an article on keyword tools and another one on keyword search on my blog if you are interested . I'm planning to write a more complex article on how those two tools from Google helps you determining the highest pay words for free. And the best thing is that it works for every language or country .

Keyword tools take they're keywords from different databases but I don't think that it's worth concentrate on this because it's the resulting keywords that I'm after not the process behind it. At least this is my opinion.
