I think this topic is getting hotter with an increase popularity of social media sites. In my opinion it should not be matter of choice between website and e.g. Facebook. The website is essential, and the social media sites are places where you should be if your potential clients hang out there.
Website and social media are highly relevant and both can feed into each other and create a stable foundation to your business.
1. Website is a virtual reflection of your business, your e-business card, which provides your existing and potential clients with key information about you, your product/service, allows them to contact with you.
2. Social Media (e.g. Facebook, Twitter) are valuable and useful tools, allow your customers to spread the word about your business and take an active part in your brand building.

Social media tools are meant for networking and sharing information with your network. Every web site needs social media integration for effectively networked with customers/visitors. In other words, you could promote your site using social media tools !

You can link them but it won't help to compare. Online marketers use social media to promote their brand. In my case, I usually search for a relevant social media community where I can expose my brand. if you choose a community relevant to your site, then you're sure to get more targeted visitors.

I think there is no comparison possible on this topic because both are completely different. Social media is the place of marketing your products and site is a static place which describe your products. And to market your products on social media, you will need a site and you must market your site on social medis to get business. So you can say they are just 2 sides of 1 coin and there is no comparison.

well, they are both part of internet, websites are your place, your core, your business, and social media is the place you go when you have free time, like coffee shop. Well, for me website and social media has its own importance in business, specially if you target the market around the globe.
