Why have page rank matters.

Why high page rank matters.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Everyone has there own idea about page rank and wheter or not if it matters for a directory. But I thought I would share my thoughts on why I think pr is important for a directory. Below is a list of reasons why I think page rank matters for a directory.

1. It is what most submitters are looking for.
Although not true for all but I would say that 80% of those that submit to directories are looking for good pr pages to be listed on. As the saying goes, "the customer is always right" so with so many submitters looking for pr then boosting your page rank is just as important as anything else. Look at this way, if you ran a coffee shop and sold every kind of coffee except expresso but 80% of your would be customers came to buy an expresso, how long do you think the coffee shop will last? Sure you will still make some money and you will still get customers from time to time, but think how much more you would get if you only added expresso to the menu. Page rank is no different, submitters are looking for it and therefore as a directory owner I think is it only fair to provide it on the highest level possible.

2. More Traffic
Many will debate wheter or not that because you have a high pr you will get more traffic. I look at this way, if you are lucky enough to get a pr 7 directory then I am will to bet that your traffic will double, why?. Since so many people look for high pr directories to submit to this will sends tons of people checking out your site, many will want to just see if it is true or not and see if your inner pages have high pr as well. But either way its traffic and the more traffic you get the more money you can make.

Having a high pr will also get people talking about your directory thus sending more traffic to the site, many will pick it apart to see if they can any flaws in it, but again it is more traffic.

3. Link Sales
Like any other kind of site with a high pr you can sell the homepage links at fairly good prices on a monthly basis, add that with a few sites wide listings also charged on monthly basis (no more than 5 it is better this way), plus the cost of a submission which could be either yearly or permanent, I would have both with featured being yearly and regular permanent.

If you have lots of high pr inner pages say 6-4 then you could easily charge at least a $100 a month for a sitewide listing. However I would charge more and only allow directories to have sitewide listings. The cost for a site wide listing would depend on how large the site is and how many pages are indexed, the more pages you have indexed the more you can charge. Plus it is good that the directory be seo friendly as well which will also provide more value for a link.

You could also sell banner space under each category on a monthly basis. There are countless ways in which you could sell links on your high pr site and make good money on a monthly basis. And as long as you keep the amount of outbound links to a max of 20 per page and you able to hold the pr then your links will always be worth the price.

Conculsion
As I said before people will always need links to their site and as long as you provide that source then you can do very well if you build up nice directory with a very good pr. Does this mean that only high pr directories will do well, no I am not saying that, what I am saying is that the higher the pr the better your site will perform.

These same reasons apply for a free directory as well. Anyone can build a free directory and get good traffic, that is easy because everyone wants a free link, but the opportunities are not the same if the pr is low. But if you have high pr directory that is free with a pr 7 or even a 6 then you can do just as well as a paid directory if not better, mainly because the directory is free and will most likely produce more traffic than a paid directory.

So I think that page rank matters if you are trying build a directory that will produce good revenue. I have never come across a directory yet that has a pr of 7 but was not doing well. High pr directories appear to be a success every time a new one is found, unless of course the page rank was fake and the inner pages had no pr on them, but the ones that are honest with good pr through the site tend to do very well with their directory.

I would keep those things in mind before I said that pr does not matter for a directory. This is a mean myth and I think people starting saying that because they do want everyone to have a high pr directory, why? So only their directories would be the ones at the top of the list with a high pr.

There are of course other factors in why page rank matters but I think that these are the most important.

was this written from the perspective of a directory webmaster? It sounds like good info, but to a specific demographic.
