Link building and Directories, and GOOGLE position

I was hoping someone could help me. I've been asked to promote a website for a friend, I've done the basic research how many back links on the competition and the page ranks etc..

The keyword is "Rubber Stamps", the top 10 sites (except wiki) have between 300-700 backlinks for that keyword.

Would directories alone help, or should I be focusing on getting links from similar companies based in different country (hence not affecting the linking sites business). I can get about 500 directory submissions from people on the forums, I was just wondering if it worth this alone, or should I try harder to help the company get to the top page of google.

The onsite optimisation is fine, according to the free SEO analysis software the page scores a good 96% whatever that means.

Also should I advise a professional SEO company to my friend (he hates spending too much money, but I've tried to explain it would be well worth the investment as the need for adwords but be less if on the top page of google). or should I have a botch of it myself as I think I can get the backlinks and relevant directories done for less than $100, and about 10 hours total work.

Its not necessarily the number of backlinks...but the quality of those links as well as the relation to your site's content. Also, there are other factors of optimization that can help boost a site past its competitors. Tags, titles and keyword rich content help too.

If you could just get listed on the first page of any search engine, your traffic would increase a lot. I don't know if an SEO company is the way to go if your friend is looking to save money. Most can be fairly expensive.

if ur ready to spend money then seo company's are the best to get ur site listed on top at search engine!
