Just a quick question, I am submitting a sitemap of my website using googles webmaster tools, but does anyone know if i can use php extensions so I can pull some data from my database, or does it have to be an xml file?

xml is the best format for submitting sitemaps to google

well.. well well..
Its easy, use php but also do url rewrite ie. write ur sitemap.php to sitemap.xml but make sure that output is in xml compliant format.. I am doing that for one of my site

For creating site map and submitting it in the google XML is the best format.
