I agree subdomains are good, but why not use subfolders? I understand that the popularity is better transferred across subfolders (domain.com/a/) than across subdomains (a.domain.com)

Subdomains are good as from the SEO point of view but as in this you have to work on main site as well as subdomains so inspite of this you should do work on main site with these efforts then you can get good results................
