It depends how much pr the links are worth. Your links might have low pr value, and your competitors links may be valuable links.

It is also important as to how many pages a site has. Do your competitors have larger websites than you?

PR has all become a farce anyway, some now claim it is getting less relevent.

Check this out:

Imagine links as if you are asking where the bathroom is in a market. If 3 people point to the back, and 10 people point to the left, you will go to the left first and then try the back if the bathroom to the left didn't satisfy you.

Of course every employee in the X-Brand store will tell you to use their bathroom (so they get more foot traffic). So you can trust that there is probably a bathroom there, but even more so if another store is saying to go to that same X-Brand bathroom.

Sites with many pages are like having many employees pointing to their own bathroom. So having a large site with supportive internal linking is helpful, but is even better if you have links from others. Oh yeah, catalog pages are usually dynamic and having all the variables after the filename can be bad for spiders. It is better, if you have time, to have static pages that are not supplemental results.

The moral of the story is for any site they need both, and public restrooms are dirty.

Yes, higher IBL considered Google as a basis in updating site PR but it depends how those links can be recognize by visitors, i mean, though you provide many links to some sites if it is not actually clicks or visited, its still useless. The longer the page view a visitor thus do to your site, the big chances it is to be crawled by Google.

PageRank is a link analysis algorithm used by the Google Internet search engine that assigns a numerical weighting to each element of a hyperlinked set of documents, such as the World Wide Web, with the purpose of "measuring" its relative importance within the set. The algorithm may be applied to any collection of entities with reciprocal quotations and references. The numerical weight that it assigns to any given element E is also called the PageRank of E and denoted by PR(E).

Important and high-quality sites receive much higher PR.Having too many backlinks doesn't mean that you will gain high PR. Quality and relevant links will carry much more weight against many links which are not relevant to your site.

Just make a unique text and good external link exchange. You will get a high PR without any backlinks.
